New Mexico State University has a rich history in quality academics, and provides an educational opportunity for individuals who are interested in practicing Equine Assisted Psychotherapy as licensed mental health professionals. NMSU is a traditional university, rather than an online college or correspondence course.

New Mexico State University has been accredited since 1926 by The Higher Learning Commission and is a member of the North Central Association. The university was accredited in 1954 by the American Association of University Women.

Students who are accepted into the graduate Marriage and Family Therapy, Social Work, or Counseling and Educational Psychology program, have the option of adding an EAP component to their program. The EAP component consists of 12 additional credits and includes the following: Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (lecture plus supervised therapy), Equine-assisted Learning (lecture plus supervised learning activities), Equitation for Therapists, and Equine Science for Therapists.

At the helm of the program is Dr. Marcel Montanez – who works to offer experience with EAP clients as part of the students’ training. Dr. Montanez invites all interested individuals to contact him at 575-405-1320 or marcel@ nmsu.edu. No prior experience with EAP is required!
