Messages from the O.K. Corral Series

BEAT the 2024 Price Increases!
With more certification seminars in 2023 than ever before, earn your certification now or pre-pay for future seminars to lock in your rate!  The countdown to 2024 has begun...and we are anticipating a continued rise in costs.  Office expenses, equine care and maintenance, and travel costs have more than doubled over the past year - as you are probably well aware.  We want to give you advance notice that the OK Corral will institute price increases January 1, 2024.  This includes all certification seminar rates, membership, and the always-popular Passport Program.  While we expect a significant increase, the OK Corral pricing will remain competitive with or even more affordable than other certification options.  We also invite pre-registrations for future seminars at the 2023 rates up until December 31, 2023.

PEER-REVIEWED BRAIN MAPPING STUDY SHOWS POSITIVE EFFECTS OF EQUINE ASSISTED THERAPY FOR PTSD

Click this LINK to access a new study that supports the use of equine-assisted therapy with clients who suffer form PTSD.  Researchers include Drs. Jane and Allan Hamilton - well-known researchers and practitioners in the equine-assisted modality.

RESPECT, SUPPORT, TRUST: WHAT SEPARATES US FROM THE HERD

The O.K. Corral Series is a people organization, and we never could even have been wished into existence without people.  And not just a few.  Fifteen years ago we had a vision for an equine-assisted organization that would share education, and specifically the philosophy Greg created with the help of hundreds of horses, clients, and colleagues.  From countless hours of equine and herd observation, to working with incarcerated, addictions, at-risk and corporate populations, Greg crystallized his experiences into specific principles that can have miraculous results when combined with people and horses.

And to this day, people continue to sign up to learn new ways to help others through equine-assisted work.  And we continue to be thankful for each and every person who registers, travels, listens, shares, writes notes, takes photos, volunteers for exercises, and becomes inspired to use their gifts in an equine-assisted way.

We RESPECT.

As an organization, it was never our goal to clone members into thousands of miniature “Gregs.” Or to give them a long list of Don’ts along with a precise script and the never ending threat of sanctions or excommunication.  We did not tell O.K. Corral Members that there is one best way to practice equine-assisted work, and we certainly didn’t require them to keep us on their payroll once they had the information they came looking for in the first place.  We didn’t ask members to pay us to regulate them.  And what this really means is that we have always had a deep RESPECT for the individuals who seek our equine-assisted training.  This means that their education and experience have value – even in the equine-assisted modalities.  Each practitioner has the opportunity to use their own instincts, values, and talents to help clients – as well as anything they put in their toolkit at one of our seminars.  Therapy is an art.  And EAP is no exception.  There is no room for tight-fitting boxes that don’t allow our membership to be the best they can be.

We SUPPORT.

People are still surprised when they call the OK Corral and Greg may answer the phone.  We are front lines.  We are back office.  We want to talk to you.  We want to SUPPORT you.  There are plenty of people out there who would like to make you feel insecure if you don’t attach yourself to a big-name organization or walk around wearing a logo that is not your own.  We have your back.  We are here for members in the shape of consultation, networking, mentorship – without financial strings attached.  No one can ever take your education away from you, and applying your education in practice will cultivate your expertise.  We want you to pursue as much education as you want or need, but our SUPPORT is not contingent on any payment or allegiance. We never wanted to be about the money – even if it meant our wishlist would have to wait so that we could offer discounts, payment plans, and generous refunds.  Because we are about the people.  We wanted it to be known that we weren’t about kickbacks or favoritism or offering rank and position to people who said what they thought we wanted to hear.  We are real.

We TRUST.

One thing we have learned is that O.K. Corral members are careful, and considerate, and more cautious than we would ever have imagined in their equine-assisted work.  They take their practice very seriously, and as a result are both respectable and respected.  We TRUST in OK Corral members.  In many ways, these trailblazers follow the path of education for the sake of learning and personal betterment – with no carrots or sticks attached!  And that is pretty remarkable in this day and age.  They are confident and secure in their motivation and abilities.  OK Corral members are here for the education, not because of insecurity or peer pressure.  They are highly-qualified professionals who understand and cherish the power of horses in our work.  O.K. Corral has remained the authentic, grass-roots leader in equine-assisted education for 15 years because of these unique characteristics.

We RESPECT. We SUPPORT. We TRUST, and we are grateful to all of you.

CORONAVIRUS AND "BUSINESS AS USUAL" AT THE CORRAL

The O.K. Corral is dedicated to offering seminar participants flexibility in the face of the uncertainty that goes along with the Coronavirus.  Our seminars will resume as planned starting at the end of April, barring any state or federal restrictions on the events.  Our hosts are eager to meet you, and we have precautions in place to keep the seminars as safe as possible for participants - including keeping the attendance small, optimal  sanitation, and safe food service.  Rest assured that in the event that the OK Corral should cancel any seminar, participants will have the option of transferring their registration to another seminar or a full refund.  We hope to meet you at a seminar soon, and please don't hesitate to contact us with any questions!

JULY MONTANA SEMINAR - PLEASE REGISTER ASAP!

The good news is that Whitefish, Montana is beautiful in late July.  The bad news is the world knows that Whitefish, Montana is beautiful in late July!  Lodging options for our "yellow" seminar (O.K., It's Family Time - DO Try This at Home!) are extremely limited.  We have secured a group rate at a local hotel for $180/night, and that is about as good as it gets unless you are camping or renting an AirBNB.  Even with such high rates, the lodging will be completely full soon, so please help us by registering for your seminar and reserving your lodging as soon as possible.  We will see you in glorious Montana!

RESEARCH: EAP RESEARCHER SEEKING EAP PARTICIPANTS
My name is Deby Torbett and I am a doctoral student in the psychology department at Walden University.  I am writing to invite you to participate in my research study about equine facilitated psychotherapy (EFP).  The purpose of this study is to explore the experiences of people who have participated in horse-assisted therapy.  By exploring such experiences, we may be able to discover what the most valuable aspects of this type of therapy may be.  By exploring the thoughts, perceptions, and feelings of people who have participated in horse-assisted therapy, we may gain insight into understanding the factors that lead to personal skill enhancement and improved self-esteem and competence.  You are eligible to be in this study because you have participated in horse-assisted therapy.

I appreciate your interest in my dissertation research.  I also appreciate your willingness to share your unique and personal thoughts, and feelings.  I value the unique contribution that you can add to my study and I am excited about the possibility of your participation.  Through your participation, I hope to understand the essence of exploring your experiences after participating in equine facilitated psychotherapy (EFP).  I am seeking vivid, accurate, and comprehensive portrayals of what these experiences were like for you: your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that were connected to your experience. The process of this study will include interview questions via Skype or in-person.

Remember, your participation will be completely voluntary.  I value your participation and thank you for the commitment of time, energy, and effort.  If you’d like to participate or have any questions about the study, signing the release form or if there are any problems with the date and time of our interview, please email me at deby.torbett@waldenu.edu.
Procedures:
If you agree to this study, you will be asked to:

  • Sign an informed consent.

  • Participate in one or two interviews with the researcher that will be approximately 30-60 minutes each.

O.K. Corral Member Publishes Equine-Assisted Novel
September 22, 2013

Ann Clemons joins the ranks of successful authors among the O.K. Corral membership!  Wild Spirits: Running with the Herd tells the story of a seventeen-year-old foster child who lands in the same “corral” as a debilitated mustang stallion rescued by the teen’s foster father.  Ann shares the beautiful story of self-discovery and the evolution of a deep relationship between the two protagonists, Elena and “Hawk.”

This novel paints a case study in the basic principles of Equine Assisted Psychotherapy from Herd vs. Pack behavior, to Pressure and Pain responses, to the “Re-Circle” method.  Not only would this novel be great for an equine-assisted book club, but it could be a meaningful read for folks of all backgrounds and ages!

Of course, the book can be ordered online or through Ann’s website, www.annclemons.com, which also features her beautiful clay tile mural art.  Look for Ann’s book to be featured on the O.K. Corral Series’ webpage devoted to “Corral Authors.”

The Most Realistic Crowdfunding?
August 22, 2013

Have you heard of "100WWC?"  How about "100 (or more) Women Who Care?"  The concept is easy - female philanthropists meet monthly to donate much-needed funding to worthy causes.  This type of philanthropy is not only for the wealthy, though, as each member agrees to commit $100.  Doing the math, if you have 100 benefactors donating $100, the lucky recipient will gain $10,000 in funding, if selected by the local 100WWC.

Not only is this a worthy cause for many of us "middle America" folks who want to make a difference in our community, but it is an excellent funding possibility for your equine-assisted program or practice!  Contact your local 100WWC chapter for specifics on how to join or present a proposal for funding for the group vote.

More than theoretical, 100 Women Who Care's Grand Haven and Muskegon, Michigan chapters donated $32,500 to Out-Side-In - an O.K. Corral certified program in Grand Haven.  For more information, visit the Santa Cruz chapter's page (http://www.100wwc.org/sc/More.html) - where there is the most complete information on local chapters in the US, Canada, & Mexico.

Being Certified Doesn't Make One an Entrepreneur
June 13th, 2012

How many people have found this out the hard way?  There is (at least) one reason why all business start-ups don’t make it.  Just because you are an expert in your field, does not make you an expert in starting a business.  This makes sense to me for every other business, why did it take me so long to apply the concept to EAP/EAL?  Because EAP/EAL is still considered new and innovative, there just aren’t that many jobs where you can work for someone else and still do the work.  Sooooo . . . many to most people either try to make their own business out of it (or try to charge money as trainers in the field).  Sometimes these efforts end in frustration.

I have heard of agencies and trainers who give EAP/EAL practitioners business tips and pointers, but, to be honest, I am not sure to what degree (if at all) it has boosted the bottom line of the people who also shelled out money for that training.  What is the answer?  Still don’t know, but I am thinking about it constantly.  Recently, Greg and I took the Nx Level entrepreneur training sponsored by the University of Nevada-Reno, and this seemed like a solid business foundation for any business owner.  What have you found?  If you know someone who is making a healthy income from EAP/EAL work (NOT training) – endeavor to learn from them all you can.  Expertise is no guarantee of business success.  Your thoughts and experiences are welcome!
